Add A Touch Of Bling To Your Holiday Outfit

EDMONTON - You’ve got a new holiday outfit ready to go, or maybe you’re relying on a classic little black dress to get you through the party season. Either way, you need a few extra touches to complete your outfit, or transform it from last year’s do-over to this year’s glamorous new look.

This holiday season in particular is a great one for bling, from bold statement jewelry to sparkly clutches and shoes. It’s virtually impossible not to find a shining example to kick up your outfit a notch.

“It’s about the glitz and glamour,” says Brittanee Tomkow, stylist at Southgate Centre. “There’s lots of sparkle, lots of shine.” That means big necklaces, cuffs, jewelled bracelets and earrings, big cocktail rings and the like, she says.

Dressy accessories like sparkly high heels, clutches, fur scarves and beautiful gloves are all the rage too.

At Groove Stone, a clothing and accessories store in Southgate, manager Corianne Brons likes the idea of taking pieces “that are interesting enough to be stand-alone, but mixing and matching them to create a really unique, layered edgy look. I’m talking about sequins and raw stones, gemstones,” she says.

Titanium quartz, for example, a dark purple and blue infused stone, looks great with black and other jewel colours, as well as gold. Gold in jewelry is also increasingly popular, especially for holiday parties, Brons adds.

The big, gold cuff bracelet shown here, embellished with sequins and rhinestones, is a good example. So too is the vintage-look, bib necklace with dark beads and stones.

“People want to stand out from the other revellers, because everyone’s looking their best this time of year, so we try and focus on looking your best while feeling unique and different,” says Brons. “We want you to be able to buy something, show up for the party and see it on nobody else.”

Diane Do, manager of Yu Fashion in Crestwood, is a fan of glamorous, vintage-style jewelry this season, like the big, romantic pieces they carry from French jewelry-maker Catherine Popesco. The jewelry goes particularly well with outfits featuring lace detail, which is also popular this season, says Do.

“They’re a very easy way to dress up an outfit,” she says.

Bracelets are also a popular choice for holiday wear among customers, adds Do. Stretch bracelets of semi-precious stones, charm bracelets and embellished cuffs and bangles are all favourites, especially when mixed together.

Mixing metals, like gold, silver and rose gold, is also a growing trend. “I think it’s more fun when you don’t match because then you stand out a little more,’ she says.

Brons agrees. “You don’t have to stick with this palette of black and silver or black and gold. You can just mix everything together and it just looks better.”
